Highlights: It’s hard to say the word ‘Nazca’ without following it immediately with the word ‘Lines,’ a reference not just to the ancient geometric lines that crisscross the Nazca desert, but to the enigmatic animal geoglyphs that accompany them. Like all great unexplained mysteries, these great etchings on the pampa, thought to have been made by a pre-Inca civilization between 450–600 AD, attract a variable fan base of archaeologists, scientists, history buffs, New Age mystics, curious tourists, and Peru pilgrims on their way to (or back from) Machu Picchu. Question marks still hang over how they were made and by whom, and the answers are often as much wild speculation as pure science (aliens? prehistoric balloonists?). Documented for the first time by North American scientist Paul Kosok in 1939 and declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 1994, the Nazca lines today are the south coast’s biggest tourist attraction. According to Dr. Maria Reiche (who had spent much of his life to the study of these lines) Nazca Lines are the largest astronomical calendar of the World.

 

Itinerary

Transfer in Nazca to the aerodrome where you will board a light aircraft for a memorable aerial tour over the world-famous Nazca Lines. This aerial tour over the Nazca Lines will cover the expanse of the stony Nazca desert, the surface of which is scarred by gigantic drawings and geometrical shapes. The flight lasts approximately 35 minutes and is the best way to see these fascinating lines and drawings that have intrigued people for years. Here, you will spot various figures drawn on the stony surface of the Nazca desert, representing animals and stylized plants, distributed in a huge labyrinth of lines, trapezes, triangles and hairsprings which have been preserved for almost 2000 years. They are the most incredible remains that an ancient culture has left behind. These designs, some of them as long as 500 meters, can be truly appreciated only from the sky at an altitude of 1,500 feet. Return to the aerodrome.
